Mom, entrepreneur, Inventor, author and founder of Mom Inventors
What inspired you to become an inventor?
My husband and I had just moved back to California, where I'd given birth to my first daughter. I had always loved working — especially my position as a presidential appointee to the Clinton Administration at the White House and the U.S. Department of Education. I wanted to continue using that part of my brain, but have more flexibility as a mom.
When my daughter grew into the toddler stage, she became intrigued with unraveling the toilet paper from the roll. The first time it was cute but lost its charm after she clogged the toilet! I looked for a solution and didn't find it so decided to invent one myself. Voila — the TP Saver was born! (It's a gadget that prevents kids and pets from unraveling the toilet paper.)
Was it a difficult process?
Even with a graduate degree and a career that took me around the world, I was at square one when it came to launching my first product and starting a business. I had no idea how to get from Point A to Point B and beyond. I had to teach myself as I went along. That's how Mom Inventors was born. I wanted to make it easier for other moms.
What has given you the greatest satisfaction?
I loved seeing my first product on store shelves. However, nothing is as gratifying as when a fellow mom tells me that membership in our community or that my first book, The Mom Inventors Handbook: How to Turn Your Great Idea Into the Next Big Thing, has helped her re-invent her own life and given her the courage to take action.
I've received this positive feedback from men as well which is also gratifying. My education, career and interests have always included an educational or social element, and running this organization allows me to provide inspiration and opportunities for moms seeking to achieve their dreams. It helps me realize something bigger than my own success.
What's next for you?
My goal is to continue expanding our community and offerings. My new book — Secrets of Millionaire Moms — not only offers my experience to help women, but also that of 17 highly successful women entrepreneurs. The Mom InventedTM brand will continue to expand, as well, with even more products made by moms, for moms — to help solve everyday problems experienced by parents across the world. And Mom Inventors will continue to provide the latest tools, resources and information to our growing community of mom entrepreneurs and helpful supporters!
