I am so frustrated as I have several ideas that are good as I have toyed with a hundred over the years. I know 2 of my products are needed in the market. I travel with a high stress job and 2 small children. I have looked at several companies who will take your product idea and see if it is suitable for marketing, but difficult to know who to trust. They want 3-4k just to review your product idea, then the patent, pitch for licensing, etc. so the fees can really add up. They also get royalties if your product gets launched......that is understandable but I am not sure what the going rate it. Anyway, wish I had the time to really focus on getting this launched......instead of just having scratch pieces of paper with my ideas and sketches scattered everywhere. I have more money than I have time, so would pay someone to do the leggwork, just don't know who to trust and the going rate for this type of service. ~Kim
Hi Kim,
I would be careful about any company that asks you for money upfront to take your product to market. There are a lot of scams out there.
I suggest that you read the Mom Inventors Handbook which will walk you through the steps. You may be able to pick up a copy at your local library. This will provide you with a road map so that you understand the entire process of bringing a product to market or licensing your product to another company.
I hope this helps.
Warmest regards,
Tamara
I to went to Davison gave them money for patent and got nothing. Then I went to an patent attorney he sounded pretty good. He love my game couldn't stop playing it. But again the money he wanted 1300 right then. Then looking online I saw Mom Inventor looks pretty good.
Just like so many of your responses, I too have a great idea to submit. What next? Like so many of you, I work outiside of home in a full-time position and have a family to take care of.
Thank you.
I have an idea that I would like to patent and be able to put on the market. I do not have a prototype to show just yet. What is the first step in moving forward with my idea. Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!
Tamara,
I have a great idea for kids that I really think ppl will buy and use! I want to sell the idea and let someone else do all the work to get it launched... I think. I know this is possible, but what I don't know is how to get started and who to trust with my idea. How do you protect a a great idea? Can you help me get started by holding my hand and walking me through the process? I'm so lost.
Sincerely, Diane
Hello,
I'm so glad I found this website. I have a prototype that I've been wanting to show to the world. It's been tested by my mother, grandmother, sisters, and three close friends. I talked to a female patent attorney and showed her the prototypes that I came up with. She loved my idea and kept me 2 hrs. in her office. She said I'd have to pay $1,000 for the application and then I'd have 1 year (this October 2011) to come up with $12,000 to get the product out to some potential companies that would be interested in making an offer. The thing is that I still can't seem to come up with all that money since I'm a homemaker. I'm a full time mommy of 5 children and it's hard enough already. Is there any other way to get my idea introduced to a company without having to pay so much money?????
Sandra,
This is outrageous for a patent attorney to say this to you! Is this an Invention Promotion Company?
I'm not an attorney but I know that you can file a provisional patent application for a few hundred dollars. This application is not a patent it is a placeholder that will give you 12 months before you need to file the official patent...if you apply for a patent at all. There are thousands of products out there that are not patented. I would suggest spending your money very carefully (i.e., on developing a great product and then marketing it aggressively.
Another note... the most important thing you can do BEFORE spending a bunch of money on your product is to make sure that there are enough people out there to buy it. This market research is perhaps the most important set you can take in this process.
Warmest regards,
Tamara
Thank you for your advice and quick response. It is an invention idea that I've had for awhile. Women will love it and men will be thankful for it too. I know it will be a big seller someday. I was advised not to tell anyone about it since the idea can easily be stolen from me. I thought of custom making some on the on the side but maybe it's not the best thing. I had tried Davison Inventions but I didnt feel comfortable when they asked me to send them what I had. Can you direct me to the website containing the provisional patent application? I have named my prototype bra-la. ; )
Sincerely, Sandra
Hi Sandra,
http://www.uspto.gov
I suggest that you read the Mom Inventors Handbook from cover to cover before you spend any money. It will walk you through the steps & provides a clear road map.
Warmest wishes,
Tamara
Sandra,
Call the US. Patent office and visit the website (USPO). The first year provisional is $110. You can fill out the application online if you have a credit/debit card. When you fill out the application online you will receive a patent number immediately which is to be used for the year. You will also need to describe your product when you fill out the application. If you send the application by mail it will take six to eight weeks before you receive a number.
What ever your product do your research it is part of your business plan, you can find that information on the website of the Dept of Commerce. You will need an NCIS number for classification, it is issued by the Dept of Commerce.
Give this consideration, license your product go to the Entrepreneur.com/encyclopedia for the meaning of licensing. I am using this method because I do not have the funds now or anytime in the future my funds have been depleted. I have had a series of health challenges over the past few years and the decline of Wall Street. I am 76 years young and I must reestablish my finacial stability. I have every confidense my product will be accepted on the market.
Leona
I wish you well.
Dearest Leona,
Thank you for the information you have given me. I hope that your health improves and I wish you the very best with your product. God bless you always.
Sincerely, Sandra
Dear Tamara,
I will follow your advice and I appreciate all you help.
Thank you, Sandra
Sandra,
I have read your comments. and see that you looked into Davison. Very smart choice. I wish I would have been that smart to not go with them. I have paid over $10,000 and it has been a year now and nothing and they want more money in order to continue. I am now looking for a lawyer to get out of their contract and my money and product back. I am learning as I go with this process of trying to get a great idea out there before someone else does. I wish you luck dont let anyone scam you. dont pay them more than you think it is worth.
Terry
So sorry to hear this Terry, I wish you the very best. I didn't pay because I did not have the money, now i'm really glad I didn't have the money.
I'm looking for a prototype company for a baby product in Seattle. Any recommendations about what to look for in a prototype company and subsequently, how to seek a reputable manufacturer (domestic and non)?
Thank you!

Hello,
My name is Agnes Ferguson. I had entered into the contest that you had
launched with my product (Bot-Top). I just want to thank you for you
refered me to a company for marketing purposes. But I had told them
that I could not do it at the time because I didn't have the funds at
the time. But since then a miracle took place. I had my product posted
on a website called Inventbay for 2 years. About 2 weeks ago an
investor that is a company that works as a legal consulting firm
contacted me and gave me good information about why they like my
product. And as of today I have signed a contract with them worth over
$160,000.00. I will be working with them as far as designing a new
prototype, production and also the sales of Bot-Top.have been waiting
for the ice to break for almost 8 years.
So now that the doors are opened for Bot-Top, I just wanted to say that
dreams do come true, but you have to hold on to it to make it come true.
Thank you
Agnes Ferguson

Agnes,
That's terrific! So happy for you, this is such a long road for many of us. The waiting is torture and very trying to our spirit. So glad you held on and didn't give up your dream. Still holding on to mine. Hopefully my big break is just around the corner too : )

I too have an idea for an invention, I have had this idea for over a year but, not sure who to trust so I am at a dead end street. Also, I have limited funds. Please direct me to the right person. I think my idea could help alot of moms... Brenda
I have a very cool invention that has been patented and it getting ready to go to market. You need to get a patent before moving forward. You should be able to do it for about $1,000. I am looking for a manufacturing company in the USA if anyone has info on that.
