6 Tips to Set Up & Promote Your Website
Creating your own website used to be a major obstacle for new business owners; however, with the many inexpensive -- even free -- easy-to-build website tools (wix.com, homestead.com, iweb.com) available today, anyone can have a website within minutes. However, just having a website is like having a box of 500 business cards sitting unused in your desk drawer. Unless people find you, a website is of little value.
Here are six tips for website beginners to consider:
1. Register related URLs keeping in mind that these fees really add up. You don’t need every extension (.net, .biz, .org, .tv). Despite the creation of these new extensions, “.com” still rules. If you think it is likely others will emulate your URL, get the most likely “.com” derivations of your URL first, www.mominventors.com, and www.mominvented.com, www.mom-inventors.com, etc. Next think of other things people will likely associate with your business such as a popular product(s); Mom Invented products or books you have written.
2. Be sure to register your www.FirstLastName.com. Next look at other extensions you feel you should own for your core business (.net, .org, .biz). Extra tip: Purchase your kids' names too for their future.
3. Upload a Google (www.toolbar.google.com) and/or Alexa (www.alexa.com/toolbar) tool bar so you can track your ranking and progress with the major search engines and learn who else is linking to your website.
5. Submit your website to the search engines and monitor it to be certain links are not dead and that it is viewable in the many different browsers. www.anybrowser.com.
