6 Tips to Set Up & Promote Your Website

Creating your own website used to be a major obstacle for new business owners; however, with the many inexpensive -- even free -- easy-to-build website tools (,, available today, anyone can have a website within minutes. However, just having a website is like having a box of 500 business cards sitting unused in your desk drawer. Unless people find you, a website is of little value.

Here are six tips for website beginners to consider:

1. Register related URLs keeping in mind that these fees really add up. You don’t need every extension (.net, .biz, .org, .tv).  Despite the creation of these new extensions, “.com” still rules. If you think it is likely others will emulate your URL, get the most likely “.com” derivations of your URL first,, and,, etc.  Next think of other things people will likely associate with your business such as a popular product(s); Mom Invented products or books you have written.

2. Be sure to register your Next look at other extensions you feel you should own for your core business (.net, .org, .biz). Extra tip: Purchase your kids' names too for their future.

3. Upload a Google ( and/or Alexa ( tool bar so you can track your ranking and progress with the major search engines and learn who else is linking to your website.

4. Register your business in appropriate directories and consider promoting your products and services in classified ad sites; e.g.,,,

5. Submit your website to the search engines and monitor it to be certain links are not dead and that it is viewable in the many different browsers.

6. Make it easy for people to share things they like on your site by adding a “Tell A Friend” button throughout the site on every page. Social Twist offers this button for free.

  3. Thanks for all of the fabulous tips ~ super helpful! :)

  4. I'm really impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Either way keep up the excellent quality writing, it’s rare to see a nice blog like this one these days..

  5. I really appreciated the suggestion of purchasing the domain name with my name AND my child's name. That's something I hadn't thought about doing... so thanks!! :)

  6. Would it also help to maybe recommend adding signatures to your email etc? Our site is an auction site that sells products made by work at home moms. We put our site in email signatures, forum posts, etc so that everytime we interact with different communities that are related to what we do, we can advertise our site accordingly. Just my 2 cents....

  7. This is a very informative! Thank you.

  8. Im so happy that I have found you! I feel really far behind on how to make my website work for me rather than sitting and collecting cyber dust. I have really been out of the internet world in any major way for the last nearly 10 years (and Im only 36!). I can use all the help I can get!

Do you have any suggestions for uploading something similar to the google toolbar for people that use mac's? Both suggestions are only for internet explorer users.

I would love to learn more about how to make my web address more visible on search engines. Any suggestions for the novice?

    Thank you,
    Allyson Klein

  9. Jackie,

  11. I couldn't agree more with these steps AND the comment above above from Randi!! Great addition to the steps provided!!

  12. Research and know the key words customers will type into a search engine to find your site. Be sure to include these keywords in your web page titles, descriptions and even product names. Repeat these words in any intro text on your pages. This helps the search engines know what each page is your site is really about!
