Working Mother Celebrates 30 Years With Successful Moms and Sound Financial Advice
Let's give three cheers to Working Mother magazine! For three decades the magazine has focused on advancement for women and in the May 2009 issue they're honoring 30 Working Mothers of the Year to mark Working Mother’s 30th birthday. All 30, including First Lady Michelle Obama, day-care teachers and high-powered executives are role models for other working mothers of all ages... Meet all the Moms here!
Another article in this issue, "Time is Money -- It Pays To Talk About It" by M.R. Kylis, gives great tips about how to learn to talk about money. Rather than chat with your girlfriends about where you bought the latest gizmo, she suggests that it's time to shift the conversation. Many of us feel uncomfortable talking with our friends about money often because we're not good with numbers or not particularly interested in finances. However, in this economy it makes sense to start learning. Getting the conversation going isn't about asking friends about their personal finances but rather asking their advice and inviting them to share what they know so that you can learn and join the conversation.
She also asks you to consider the financial example you're setting for your kids: By learning the basics yourself, you can teach your children to think about finances from an early age. Think about how much easier it is to learn a foreign language when you're a kid. The same is true for money, yet we rarely talk about it!
Did your parents teach you about money? If so, what info did they share that made the most difference? Was the topic of money taboo in your house? Please leave your comments below.

Hi Tamara,
Thanks for putting all of this together for us moms. I've always been interested in inventions (since I was about 5 years old!) and that's why I became a patent attorney. Now I'm an intellectual property attorney, working with other forms of IP in addition to patents, e.g., trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. I'm also a mom with three little boys at home and I'm always trying to give them more of my time!
I love Working Mothers mag and I was pleased to see your posting. Unfortunately, my parents did not teach me hardly anything about money. Their example was/is to spend whatever they had. As a result, I'm not much of a spender, especially on myself. I guess they did a good job after all :)
